Ship Design: All stakeholders have an important role to play in achieving the safety & environmental targets

Ships are technically sophisticated, high-value assets, that can cost hundreds of millions of dollars to build.

The Bahamas Shipowners Association (BSA) recognizes that maintaining high standards in ship design and shipbuilding and investing in Research & Development, is the foundation for a safe, efficient, and sustainable maritime industry.

Shipowners endeavor to buy energy-efficient ships and install environmentally friendly equipment onboard their fleets, but we must not forget that shipowners and ship operators rarely design the ship they contract to build and can only order and operate such ships as are offered by shipyards, using the available technology offered by manufacturers and other providers.

To achieve the safety and environmental targets set by regulators, all stakeholders have an important role to play. It is only through continuous collaboration between regulators, shipyards, owners, charterers and manufacturers, that we can make sure that every vessel on the oceans meets the highest standards of quality and safety.
