The Joint ILO–IMO Tripartite Working Group has made a significant step toward protecting seafarers’ rights by adopting the guidelines on Fair Treatment of Seafarers Detained in Connection with Alleged Crimes (the Guidelines).
The Guidelines aim to protect seafarers implicated in alleged crimes by promoting fairness during investigations or detentions, preventing unnecessary delays, and ensuring adherence to the laws of the port or coastal State.
The Bahamas Shipowners Association (BSA) calls upon all Members to implement these new Guidelines, while continuing to comply with the 2001 Guidelines on Shipowners’ Responsibilities in Respect of Contractual Claims for Personal Injury to or Death of Seafarers, to ensure the fair treatment of our seafarers safeguarding their rights.
